What kind of lens are you using? Judging by 450mm of 35mm equivalent it should be a 300mm. Is it a 70-300mm VR? I have a D40x as well and it produces excellent pictures with 70-300mm VR, I seldom have to PP a lot. If you're shooting at such extream without a tripod you definitely need a VR lens.

D40x is an excellent camera, I have lots of shots taken at ISO 1600 crisp sharp without any grains. If you like me like to zoom to extrem then invest a 70-300mm VR, it's an excellent lens gives beautiful bokeh that will make your photos even more beautiful! :-)
